Why does matter have the properties it has?
These three formulae are very mysterious. We use them, but we don’t know why we have to use them, why matter should have these properties.
For instance, we don’t know why light can come out of something, and why it has this particular speed (C = 300 000 km/sec) which cannot be altered. Well, it can be altered - we can influence that speed, but generally light travels at that speed in our space, and nobody knows why. Someone once said: “This speed limit must mean that there is a relationship between space and time”. That person was Albert Einstein. And from this deduction he derived the laws of gravity.
All of this is very strange: someone finds that there is a limit on the speed of light and that this proves that there is a correlation between space and time, and from that premise the laws of gravity can be expressed. Very strange. Nobody knows why the laws of pysics are as they are.
Time poses yet other problems. We know something about space, and we know something about time. For example, in physics time goes from the past to the future, but it can also go backwards.
This phenomenon is called the CPT, the Charge Parity Time invariance. This invariance is necessary to explain how matter works, and why the universe has emerged. But then, along comes this chemist and says: "Time can only go in one direction, from past to future, otherwise life couldn’t emerge". And yet, we know that the universe exists, and we know that life exists. So the question is: Why, at one time, do we find out that time is reversible, while at another time, we find that it must be irreversible in order for the emergence of life to be possible?
