And when we look at this inner dimension of consciousness we become aware that there is an increase in complexity that starts to emerge and develop. So that a 2 year old is very different from a 6 year old or a 10 year old or a 20 year old in their capacity to understand and care. So the person who is 10 can care more than the person who is 2. A person who is 2 only cares about what is next and about themselves. Even so we found something very interesting was that a young child of 2 and 3, even though that they are very young, and very egocentric, still know what is right and what is wrong. They can still choose and tell you what is better. So if you give them a very simple example of is it better to scream at somebody or is it better to talk to them in a nice voice. The child at three will still be able to tell you which of those alternatives is better. So we use a very simple model o bring in this moral context that we from a very early age can choose, and we can actually see differences which are very very important. And that model comes from the work of Andrew Cohen and the focus is on this ability that we have this faculty of choice, that we are able to choose. Many people are of course aware that they choose but it is not about which toothpaste or telephone company we are going to use but sort of..how we are going to relate to each other.
